Coca-Cola Nederland werkt hard aan duurzaam omgaan met zijn belangrijkste grondstof: water. Een van de manieren waarop ze dat doen, is door projecten te steunen van Natuurmonumenten waarbij waterlopen worden hersteld. De nieuwste is het herstel van middeleeuwse visvijvers op veengronden in Drenthe. Voor de jaarlijkse partnerdag OPEN sprak ik met directeur klimaat en water bij Coca-Cola Jan Burger en programmamanager Jan Bos van Natuurmonumenten. Architect Francine Houben, oprichter van Mecanoo, is jarenlang stadsbouwmeester van Almere geweest, en nog steeds is het nieuwe land – Almere én Lelystad – haar dierbaar. Wat is het belangrijkste toekomstplan voor Almere nu? Een visie op de 42 kilometer lange kustlijn, is haar overtuiging – een visie waarvoor zij toen al de basis heeft gelegd.

The Harvard GSD Loeb Fellowship is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year with a series of online events about the work Loeb Fellows do in the built and natural environment. As a Loeb of ’07 I was honored to be invited to moderate a converation with Kimberly Driggins (LF ’16) and Shaney Pena Gómez (LF ’18) about inclusion.

Together with Wouter Jan Verheul of the Master City Developer program and Pakhuis De Zwijger, the John Adams organized a hybrid event with urban sociologist Sharon Zukin from New York, with myself as moderator. She talked about her findings for her book ‘The Urban Innovation Complex’, about how tech gravitates to cities with space and talent and how cities vie to draw in tech. Universities are in on the game too, collecting and spending huge amounts on new tech hubs such as the ‘Brooklyn Innovation Coastline’ and Cornell Tech Campus – a new strategy known as academic capitalism.

But does it work? Do these mega-investments really benefit the city, or do they just pay the salaries of software engineers in the Midwest and manufacturers in Asia? Sharon was joined in the studio by Rinke Zonneveld, director of the public-private Innovation Quarter in the Hague-Rotterdam region and by Katja Rusinovic of the Haagsche Hogeschool. This was FUN! Every year the John Adams Institute organizes a lecture series for high school kids. This year Gabe Marino gave a great talk, both in schools and online, about California, ranging from the 19th century Gold Rush through its gorgeous landscapes, its culture of surf sun & sex, movies and music and of course Silicon Valley. Ever wondered what all those garages looked like where Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and the Google boys invented our modern-day tech culture? Check it out in this video!

Het had een echt gesprek zullen zijn, face to face en voor publiek, op het toneel van het Frascati Theater, over theater en architectuur. Het event zou een samenwerking zijn van het Holland Festival en het John Adams Institute, waarvan ik de directeur ben. Wat een buitenkans om een bijzondere vrouw te spreken: Liz Diller, een van de grote vrouwen in de hedendaagse architectuur en de ‘D’ van DS+R, Diller Scofidio and Renfro, een van de belangrijkste bureau’s in de hedendaagse architectuur.

Aanleiding voor haar komst naar Amsterdam, en voor het interview, was haar samenwerking met de associate artist van het Holland Festival dit jaar, de choreograaf Bill T. Jones. Ze kennen elkaar al zo’n twintig jaar; nu heeft ze het toneelbeeld ontworpen voor zijn voorstelling Deep Blue Sea, die medio april in première zou gaan in the Armory in New York en daarna naar het Holland Festival zou komen.
